In our hands

To raise awareness and promote action on national environment issues, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 each year and this year’s theme is "Kick The Habit: Towards A Low-Carbon Economy".

It highlights resources and initiatives that promote low-carbon economies and lifestyles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation, tree planting, and eco-friendly consumption.

Do You Know?

1. For every kilogram of waste you throw out, you produce 1kg of carbon dioxide. You can cut this figure by 30% if you recycle all paper, glass, metal and plastic.

2. Over 46,000 pieces of plastic litter - including bits of packaging, cigarette lighters, plastic bags and diapers are floating on every square mile (2.6sq km) of the oceans.

3. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will power a 100W light bulb for almost an hour, a computer for 20 minutes, a television for 15 minutes and a washing machine for 10 minutes.

4. The global atmosphere has warmed 0.74 Celsius over the past century. Temperatures will climb 0.2 Celsius per decade for the next 20 years. If the hikes exceed 1.5 to 2.5 Celsius, some 20% to 30% of plant and animal species will face the risk of extinction.

5. Freshwater withdrawals from lakes and rivers have doubled since 1960, with three-quarters used for agriculture. Water scarcity in many areas constrains food production, exacerbating hunger and poverty, and reduces other ecosystem services provided by water.

TIPS TO GO GREEN EVERYDAY

1. Shop with your own reusable 'green bag' instead of using plastic bags.

2. Turn off lights, TV and computers when not in use.

3. Unplug your mobile phone as soon as it has been fully charged.

4. Use energy saving light bulbs in every room.

5. Buy reusable batteries. You'll save money and energy use.

6. Pay bills on-line and subscribe to e-Statements to save paper and avoid unnecessary car trips.

7. Remember the three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The future of all life on earth depends on each and everyone of us.

So ACT NOW and GO GREEN EVERY DAY!
