Term 6: Quality Management

Quality management can be considered to have three main components: quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement. Quality management focused not only on product/service quality but also the means to achieve it. Quality management therefore uses quality assurance and control of processes as well as products to achieve more consistent quality.

Quality management adopts a number of management principles that can be used by upper management to guide their organisations towards improved performance. The principles cover:

~ Customer focus
~ Leadership
~ Involvement of people
~ Process approach
~ System approach to management
~ Continual improvement
~ Factual approach to decision making
~ Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

Term 5: Business Ethics

Business ethics is the application of ethical values to business behaviour. It applies to any and all aspects of business conduct, from boardroom strategies and how companies treat their suppliers to sales techniques and accounting practices. Ethics goes beyond the legal requirements for a company and is, therefore, discretionary. Business ethics applies to the conduct of individuals and to the conduct of the organisation as a whole. It is about how a company does its business, how it behaves intrinsically.

Term 4: Strategic Management

Strategic management is an ongoing process that evaluates and controls the business and the industries in which the company is involved; assesses its competitors and sets goals and strategies to meet all existing and potential competitors; and then reassesses each strategy annually or quarterly [i.e. regularly] to determine how it has been implemented and whether it has succeeded or needs replacement by a new strategy to meet changed circumstances, new technology, new competitors, a new economic environment, or a new social, financial, or political environment.

Summarily, strategic management is the process of specifying an organization's objectives, developing policies and plans to achieve these objectives and allocating resources so as to implement the plans.

Term 3: Managing Change

Organizational change should not be conducted for the sake of change. But organizational change efforts should be geared to improve the performance of organizations and the people in those organizations. Therefore, it's useful to have some understanding of what is meant by "performance" and the various methods to manage performance in organizations.

Summarily, change management is a structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams and organizations from a current state to a desired future state. Change management (or change control) is the process during which the changes of a system are implemented in a controlled manner by following a pre-defined framework/model with, to some extent, reasonable modifications.

Term 1: Management Accounting

The first subject for the first semester.

Management Accounting is an integral part of management concerned with identifying, presenting and interpreting information. It largely concerns the future, rather than the past. Due to it’s intended usage, it tends to be more organisation-and-situation-specific.

On the other hand, the purpose of management accounting is the provision of useful information to help management plan, control and make decisions.
